The More Design, Less Waste project explores design-driven upcycling as a sustainable approach to repurposing post-consumer and post-production waste. Originating from the Hybrid Design Lab at the University of Naples Federico II, this initiative addresses environmental and socio-economic challenges, particularly in Campania, Italy, where waste management and unemployment are pressing issues.
By fostering a transdisciplinary collaboration between designers, material scientists, chemists, and ecologists, the project has developed innovative upcycling methodologies that can be applied across various waste streams, from food industry byproducts to discarded construction materials. The objective is to create new entrepreneurial opportunities for young designers and encourage circular economy principles through functional and aesthetically appealing products.
Since its inception in 2013, the research has led to tangible applications, including furniture from mussel and sea urchin waste, lamps made from repurposed wine barrels, and home accessories crafted from construction debris. These products serve as both functional and communicative tools, raising awareness about waste valorization while promoting ethical consumption habits.
The project draws inspiration from nature’s principles of cyclicality and regeneration. By observing how natural systems efficiently utilize resources, the team applies bioinspired strategies to transform waste materials into valuable products. This approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also adds cultural and evocative value to the repurposed materials.
Hybrid Design Lab is constantly evolving, searching for ideas that bring our cornerstones – nature, technology and design – into harmony.
